When I was younger, restaurants always seemed to give you the bill on a saucer full of After Eight mints, which I guess must have been a 90s thing as it doesn’t seem to really happen anymore (or at least to me). Obviously being an adult now, the time when the bill comes is also far less fun given that the days of piggy banks and pocket money are long behind me, but to add insult to injury there’s definitely a distinct lack of After Eight action going on in the restaurants I frequent too. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – peanut butter is one of the loves of my adult life. I’ll happily eat it on its own, but I’m fully aware that there are some foods out there that complement it beautifully too. Chocolate is one (try our peanut butter chocolate cheesecake slice if you don’t believe me) and jam (or jelly to our American pals) is another. In fact we must applaud our friends across the pond for this delicious combination as they came up with PB&J over 100 years ago! It seems to have taken its time to become quite as popular in old Blighty, but the PB&J revolution is definitely now growing momentum over here too. Continue reading

Carrot cake is a funny old thing isn’t it? It’s like it was way ahead of its time; these days people are putting all sorts of vegetables into their sweet baked goods – courgette, sweet potato, beetroot, you name a vegetable and there is probably a cake recipe that uses it somewhere. Gooey double chocolate peanut butter cookies

When Mr H and I went to New York a couple of months ago we had a huge list of things (mainly food related) that we wanted to pack in to our five day visit. My list included things like The Butcher’s Daughter  and Hu Kitchen and his included such culinary gems as Carnegie Deli and Levain Bakery. Now I know as well as the next woman that the secrets of a happy marriage are compromise and a well fed husband, plus here at D&H we believe in active avoidance (so whilst I might know that a piece of chocolate cake might make me feel rubbish tomorrow, I’ll have a couple of bites if I fancy it and not give myself a guilt trip for doing so), so I was happy to indulge him, and indeed as it turns out, myself. Three ingredient raspberry chia jam


Jam really takes me back to my childhood; jam and cheese sandwiches (don’t knock it till you’ve tried it), a spoonful of jam stirred into hot rice pudding, my mums incredible sponge cake filled with jam that my brother and I simply referred to as ‘jammy cake’, my grandma’s amazing homemade jam tarts, the list just goes on and on. Nourishing rainbow bowl

I love to promote the concept of ‘eating the rainbow’. Did you know that the colours of different fruits and veggies indicates an abundance of certain nutrients? For example; greens are rich in vitamins B, E and K, orange/yellow foods have lots of vitamins A and C, and purple produce is packed with vitamins C and K as well as heaps of antioxidants. The reason for this is due to the phytochemicals that give plants their colour; each particular phytochemical brings with it a unique set of disease-busting chemicals – kind of like power rangers! Slow cooker sweet potato chocolate fudge cake with chocolate frosting

Baking a cake for someone is just about one of the most fulfilling things you can do in my opinion. Home-baked cakes just taste so much better, I guess because they are made with love instead of additives! I first made this cake for the original Mrs H, who I affectionately refer to as my smother-in-law. She is so loving and kind (and is probably the biggest chocoholic I know after Mr H) so it seemed only right to debut this recipe on her birthday!

Neapolitan cheesecake

My birthday (which is the 24th April if you were wondering) often falls within the Jewish holiday of Passover, and this year is no exception. Don’t be deceived though by the word ‘holiday’ – this is not a good thing! During the eight days of Passover we refrain from eating anything with yeast in it, because when the Children of Israel were escaping Egypt they didn’t have time for their bread to rise, so they had to take unleavened bread with them.
