Once upon a time, a twenty something accountess living in a cute but small flat in Chalk Farm, happened upon a recipe during some recipe testing (when she probably should have been doing her day job) that she thought was possibly the best thing ever. She gave some to her new husband, and he agreed. Despite wanting to try and create other new recipes, this recipe was so good that she had to always have a batch of it in the freezer. Every week she made a batch of 16 squares. But soon they outgrew it, and two batches a week were necessary. On their moving day to their newly purchased family home, she cut them each a huge slab of it, to keep them going throughout the morning and as a cheers of sorts to their new home. Continue reading

‘Rawfter Eight’ mint thins
When I was younger, restaurants always seemed to give you the bill on a saucer full of After Eight mints, which I guess must have been a 90s thing as it doesn’t seem to really happen anymore (or at least to me). Obviously being an adult now, the time when the bill comes is also far less fun given that the days of piggy banks and pocket money are long behind me, but to add insult to injury there’s definitely a distinct lack of After Eight action going on in the restaurants I frequent too. Peanut butter and raspberry jam cheesecake slice
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – peanut butter is one of the loves of my adult life. I’ll happily eat it on its own, but I’m fully aware that there are some foods out there that complement it beautifully too. Chocolate is one (try our peanut butter chocolate cheesecake slice if you don’t believe me) and jam (or jelly to our American pals) is another. In fact we must applaud our friends across the pond for this delicious combination as they came up with PB&J over 100 years ago! It seems to have taken its time to become quite as popular in old Blighty, but the PB&J revolution is definitely now growing momentum over here too.
Gooey double chocolate peanut butter cookies
When Mr H and I went to New York a couple of months ago we had a huge list of things (mainly food related) that we wanted to pack in to our five day visit. My list included things like The Butcher’s Daughter and Hu Kitchen and his included such culinary gems as Carnegie Deli and Levain Bakery. Now I know as well as the next woman that the secrets of a happy marriage are compromise and a well fed husband, plus here at D&H we believe in active avoidance (so whilst I might know that a piece of chocolate cake might make me feel rubbish tomorrow, I’ll have a couple of bites if I fancy it and not give myself a guilt trip for doing so), so I was happy to indulge him, and indeed as it turns out, myself. Nourishing rainbow bowl
I love to promote the concept of ‘eating the rainbow’. Did you know that the colours of different fruits and veggies indicates an abundance of certain nutrients? For example; greens are rich in vitamins B, E and K, orange/yellow foods have lots of vitamins A and C, and purple produce is packed with vitamins C and K as well as heaps of antioxidants. The reason for this is due to the phytochemicals that give plants their colour; each particular phytochemical brings with it a unique set of disease-busting chemicals – kind of like power rangers! Slow cooker sweet potato chocolate fudge cake with chocolate frosting
Baking a cake for someone is just about one of the most fulfilling things you can do in my opinion. Home-baked cakes just taste so much better, I guess because they are made with love instead of additives! I first made this cake for the original Mrs H, who I affectionately refer to as my smother-in-law. She is so loving and kind (and is probably the biggest chocoholic I know after Mr H) so it seemed only right to debut this recipe on her birthday!
Matcha latte
Giving up caffeine is HARD. I would know, I used to drink a tonne of it and then one day I made the decision to go completely cold turkey (not a good idea) and see how I felt. Well I felt bloody terrible; I had no energy, my head was banging and I couldn’t concentrate on anything. Continue reading
Raw chocolate Easter eggs with my three favourite fillings
Creme Eggs are so last year. In fact I’ve never liked them (too sweet and sickly for me) but what I do love is chocolates with fillings. I used to always pick the Strawberry Cremes out of the Roses tin and the Galaxy Truffles out of the celebrations box, and don’t even get me started on how much I love peanut butter cups. Yum. So with these three favourites in mind, I’ve given the traditional Creme Egg a little overhaul (and in my opinion my lovely trio are a lot tastier too). Continue reading
Chocolate Easter nests with marzipan eggs
I used to love making Easter nests when I was little – my mum would melt the chocolate and then I’d get to stir in the Rice Krispies and spoon the mixture mostly into cake cases, but also some into my mouth. Some things never change – I still love making them, and I still manage to eat a fair amount of the mixture in the process. But these days I call it taste testing, so that makes it ok. Right? No dairy? No problem! Our delicious creamy almond cheese
We’re not going to lie to you lovely D&H’ers, we were always a little skeptical of dairy-free cheese. The idea of making creamy, dairy-like deliciousness from nuts conjured up all sorts of weird-tasting images, but in the name of research we decided to give it a go!
So we’ve come up with this fabulous almond cheese, which can be enjoyed either raw (as a creamy cheesy spread) or baked (for a crumbly feta-like consistency). It’s so delicious and super creamy as well as being packed with protein and good fats. Oh and of course it’s really easy to make, you know we like to keep things simple! So what are you waiting for…give it a whirl! Continue reading
