When I was younger, restaurants always seemed to give you the bill on a saucer full of After Eight mints, which I guess must have been a 90s thing as it doesn’t seem to really happen anymore (or at least to me). Obviously being an adult now, the time when the bill comes is also far less fun given that the days of piggy banks and pocket money are long behind me, but to add insult to injury there’s definitely a distinct lack of After Eight action going on in the restaurants I frequent too. Gooey double chocolate peanut butter cookies
When Mr H and I went to New York a couple of months ago we had a huge list of things (mainly food related) that we wanted to pack in to our five day visit. My list included things like The Butcher’s Daughter and Hu Kitchen and his included such culinary gems as Carnegie Deli and Levain Bakery. Now I know as well as the next woman that the secrets of a happy marriage are compromise and a well fed husband, plus here at D&H we believe in active avoidance (so whilst I might know that a piece of chocolate cake might make me feel rubbish tomorrow, I’ll have a couple of bites if I fancy it and not give myself a guilt trip for doing so), so I was happy to indulge him, and indeed as it turns out, myself. Slow cooker sweet potato chocolate fudge cake with chocolate frosting
Baking a cake for someone is just about one of the most fulfilling things you can do in my opinion. Home-baked cakes just taste so much better, I guess because they are made with love instead of additives! I first made this cake for the original Mrs H, who I affectionately refer to as my smother-in-law. She is so loving and kind (and is probably the biggest chocoholic I know after Mr H) so it seemed only right to debut this recipe on her birthday!
Triple chocolate raw frosted brownies
Sometimes when I speak to people about how I’ve changed my diet they become very concerned, and ask me how I can possibly survive without chocolate or comfort food. I like it when this happens, as it gives me a chance to explain that healthy and nutritious food can most certainly tick all the boxes when you’re feeling in need of a pick me up. Continue reading
Raw chocolate Easter eggs with my three favourite fillings
Creme Eggs are so last year. In fact I’ve never liked them (too sweet and sickly for me) but what I do love is chocolates with fillings. I used to always pick the Strawberry Cremes out of the Roses tin and the Galaxy Truffles out of the celebrations box, and don’t even get me started on how much I love peanut butter cups. Yum. So with these three favourites in mind, I’ve given the traditional Creme Egg a little overhaul (and in my opinion my lovely trio are a lot tastier too). Continue reading
Chocolate Easter nests with marzipan eggs
I used to love making Easter nests when I was little – my mum would melt the chocolate and then I’d get to stir in the Rice Krispies and spoon the mixture mostly into cake cases, but also some into my mouth. Some things never change – I still love making them, and I still manage to eat a fair amount of the mixture in the process. But these days I call it taste testing, so that makes it ok. Right? Creamy chocolate quinoa porridge
Porridge, quinoa and cacao have to be three of my favourite things. So when the lovely people at Quinola sent us some of their new quinoa flakes to try, there was no doubt in my mind what I was going to make with them. Not only do I love the taste of quinoa, but it’s high in protein and will keep you full for hours, so it’s a fabulous alternative to oats if you’re looking to spice up your brekkie a little. Plus, almond milk is packed with good fats and cacao is choc-full (pun intended) of antioxidants, so all in all whilst it may look indulgent it’s a wonderfully healthy start to the day! No-bake five ingredient red velvet brownie bites
These are possibly the most delicious thing I have ever tasted and what’s more, you don’t even need a) an oven and b) a food processor to get involved. AND they only require five ingredients and take just a couple of minutes to make. Mind-blowing stuff huh? Continue reading
Super simple raw chocolate covered strawberries
Everything tastes better coated in chocolate – fact. Especially strawberries. These raw chocolate covered strawberries are such a fabulous little dish to serve your dinner party guests over an after dinner coffee (or fresh mint tea in my case) and they look really impressive too, but they won’t take you more than five minutes to prepare! Continue reading
Chocolate orange pumpkins
No tricks here, just delicious Halloween treats! We wanted to come up with a healthy, guilt-free treat that is easy to make (for big people and little people too!) and these chocolate orange pumpkin bites proved to be just the ticket! Continue reading
