Smashed avocado on toast

I have a massive sweet tooth, but there are times (usually after a lot of dessert recipe testing) that my body craves something savoury first thing in the morning. Even if I’m in a massive rush I still make time for breakfast (it’s a cliche but it really is the most important meal of the day) and my favourite go-to savoury brekkie has to be smashed avocado on toast. I don’t even know if this can technically be called a ‘recipe’ because it’s just so simple and quick to make, but it tastes so amazing that I just had to share it with you. Spring salad

Springtime has well and truly hit us here in London (after some weird snow outbursts in the end of April – very odd) and we just couldn’t be more excited. The word ‘spring’ itself is so onomatopoeic – it makes you feel energised and happy just saying it – and for us it resembles new beginnings and new life. It’s probably not a coincidence then that our blog was born during this very season, and that both Mrs D and myself left our stressful and unfulfilling corporate jobs in springtimes past and present.  Continue reading

Vegetable donburi

I’m not going to pretend that this exotic sounding dish was inspired by a visit to an equally as exotic sounding location – in fact what prompted me to create it was many a visit to Wagamama when Mr H and I were studying for our accounting exams. It was my go-to dish back in the day (I thought it was healthy because it was made with brown rice), but it always seemed to leave me absolutely parched and I’d spend the whole afternoon drinking water like it was going out of fashion. Mexican stuffed mushrooms

And so, my obsession with Mexican food continues. I just can’t stop – there’s something about the flavours and the textures that I just love so much (and Mr H does too) so usually we end up having a Mexican-inspired meal at least once a week. Obviously it’s nice to mix it up a little so sometimes we have tacos, sometimes we have burrito bowls and sometimes we have mole-inspired quinoa and we always ALWAYS have guac, and lots of it. Nourishing rainbow bowl

I love to promote the concept of ‘eating the rainbow’. Did you know that the colours of different fruits and veggies indicates an abundance of certain nutrients? For example; greens are rich in vitamins B, E and K, orange/yellow foods have lots of vitamins A and C, and purple produce is packed with vitamins C and K as well as heaps of antioxidants. The reason for this is due to the phytochemicals that give plants their colour; each particular phytochemical brings with it a unique set of disease-busting chemicals – kind of like power rangers! Roasted tenderstem broccoli with a tangy tahini dressing

Broccoli is definitely one of my all time favourite vegetables, which I’m fully aware puts me firmly in the weirdo category, but I’m cool with that. I’m one of those people that needs no encouraging to eat their greens, but I know that many kids (and husbands) need a little nudge or two in the right direction.  Continue reading

No dairy? No problem! Our delicious creamy almond cheese

We’re not going to lie to you lovely D&H’ers, we were always a little skeptical of dairy-free cheese. The idea of making creamy, dairy-like deliciousness from nuts conjured up all sorts of weird-tasting images, but in the name of research we decided to give it a go!

So we’ve come up with this fabulous almond cheese, which can be enjoyed either raw (as a creamy cheesy spread) or baked (for a crumbly feta-like consistency). It’s so delicious and super creamy as well as being packed with protein and good fats. Oh and of course it’s really easy to make, you know we like to keep things simple! So what are you waiting for…give it a whirl!  Continue reading

Slow cooker aubergine, mushroom and lentil bolognaise

My slow cooker was one of the best presents I received for my wedding. Although I’m aware this statement makes me sound a little old (and maybe a bit sad?) it’s the truth. Slow cookers are just amazing – you throw in a bunch of stuff, set the timer and when you come home at the end of the day you open the door to the smell of amazing food and lo and behold there’s a perfectly cooked dinner ready and waiting. It’s just so easy, but it also makes the food so delicious as it keeps in all the moisture and makes everything really tender. Continue reading

Easy peasy ‘cheesy’ pasta bake

Pasta bake used to be one of those dishes I’d make if I fancied something warming, comforting and indulgent for dinner. And while I’d always enjoy it while eating it, I’d also always feel bloated, lethargic and a bit gross after eating it. But luckily for me (and now you too) it’s totally possible to have all of the yum with none of the stodge.

You had me at shalom – Israeli inspired roasted aubergine with tahini

Whenever I go and visit my cousins in Israel, I end up on the aubergine diet. I just can’t help it – though I may flirt with hummus, falafel, israeli salad and shakshouka, if I see a menu and there’s an aubergine on it, it’s all I can think about ordering. I never seem to tire of it; the combination of fresh coriander, creamy tahini and aubergine charred on the outside and soft and fleshy on the inside is just beyond heavenly. Continue reading
