Nine ingredient iced carrot cake

Carrot cake is one of my all time favourite cakes, it always has been. I’m a massive chocoholic, but ever since I was little I could never resist a slice of moist, rich, spiced carrot cake with that delicious cream cheese frosting.

It’s such a random idea for a dessert though isn’t it? I mean I know these days there are sweet potato brownies or  chocolate cakes that count beetroot or courgette among their ingredients, but vegetables hiding in baked goods seems to be a pretty new phenomenon, except for our beloved carrot cake. Not only bloody delicious, but so ahead of its time. And who thought up the idea of cream cheese frosting? Whoever it was, I salute them. Or I used to salute them, these days I’d probably ask them if they’d considered giving up dairy and point them in the direction of my blog. Continue reading

Super simple raw chocolate covered strawberries

Everything tastes better coated in chocolate – fact. Especially strawberries. These raw chocolate covered strawberries are such a fabulous little dish to serve your dinner party guests over an after dinner coffee (or fresh mint tea in my case) and they look really impressive too, but they won’t take you more than five minutes to prepare! Detoxifying green smoothie

January. The month after the most fun month of the year. Many of us are feeling like perhaps we overdid it a little during the festive season, and I’m not just talking about food (and alcohol). Money seems to weirdly disappear into some crazy Christmas vortex between 24th December and 1st January, and we end up wondering where it all went. In my case Christmas sales are often to blame, for Mr H his patronage of many a London pub sees to it that we are both equally broke come the beginning of January. Continue reading

Easy peasy ‘cheesy’ pasta bake

Pasta bake used to be one of those dishes I’d make if I fancied something warming, comforting and indulgent for dinner. And while I’d always enjoy it while eating it, I’d also always feel bloated, lethargic and a bit gross after eating it. But luckily for me (and now you too) it’s totally possible to have all of the yum with none of the stodge.

You had me at shalom – Israeli inspired roasted aubergine with tahini

Whenever I go and visit my cousins in Israel, I end up on the aubergine diet. I just can’t help it – though I may flirt with hummus, falafel, israeli salad and shakshouka, if I see a menu and there’s an aubergine on it, it’s all I can think about ordering. I never seem to tire of it; the combination of fresh coriander, creamy tahini and aubergine charred on the outside and soft and fleshy on the inside is just beyond heavenly. Continue reading

Four ingredient acai bowl

Acai bowls are taking the world by storm – and for very good reason. Give me a breakfast that looks like a sorbet and tastes like a sorbet, but is actually amazingly good for you and well, I’m sold. I’ll admit that here at D&H we are perhaps a little late to the acai bowl party as it seems people have been going mad for these for some time now, but we’re definitely making up for lost time!

Dhal-iciously simple red lentil dhal

A couple of years ago I was lucky enough to travel to India with Mr H for a couple of weeks. I can truly say that I have never been to such an incredible, eye-opening and fascinating country – from the second we stepped off the plane (in fact even before we landed, as we saw the rows and rows of slums that lined the airport fences) it was clear that this was going to be no ordinary holiday.

Berrylicious baked oats

When it’s chilly outside, I always need something warming to stoke up my little fire in the mornings and keep me going until lunchtime (ok until elevenses maybe). I’m a massive porridge lover, but sometimes it’s nice to spice things up a bit and make something a little different. Continue reading

Four ingredient speedy banoffee shake

I love a good old green juice in the mornings, but sometimes I need a little indulgence in my life (usually on a Friday, but Monday to Thursday work well too). And what could be more indulgent than a banoffee ‘milk’shake! Continue reading

Seven ingredient raw yule log

Christmas is a time for deliciousness. There’s just no doubt about it. And (contrary to what some people might think) that doesn’t stop if you’re vegan, plant-based, raw, paleo, or whatever you might be, if you’re healthy then Christmas can be just as delicious for you too. Continue reading
