Pancake day. Despite being a Jewish/atheist household, we go all out for other religion’s festivals, especially when there’s food involved. Christmas? Count us in. Easter? Yes please! And pancake day…hell yes.

Usually we have a pancake party, it’s been going since 2009 I think, or maybe 2010, but it’s definitely a long running tradition and a good one at that. I’m a bit gutted but because of something a little exciting that’s going on I’m not actually hosting said gathering this year for the first year since we started, but I’ll make up for it with lots of delicious pancakes instead!

We don’t do Valentines Day really. Mr H stopped buying me flowers about 8 years ago because I ‘ just kill them’ (not sure if he’s aware of the irony that they’re kinda dead already once they’ve been pulled out of the ground) and we’re not fans of overpriced set menus in restaurants full of couples who sit there and don’t talk to each other. When I started sharing recipes on this blog in early 2015, writing a recipe book felt like something way beyond my reach. But, I stuck it on my bucket list anyway, and carried on doing what I loved – creating the yummiest things I could possibly dream up, and sharing them on here. One December, in my previous life as a refined sugar addict, I decided it was time to try my hand at baking. And so, I did as every amateur baker might do and headed to the Betty Crocker section of the baking aisle. I picked myself up a packet of supposedly foolproof chocolate cookies and headed back to my kitchen. I made them as per the instructions, but must have gone wrong somewhere, as they were rock hard. I wasn’t about to give up though, I got out my icing sugar and decorated them to make them look like 2D Christmas puddings.

I was so pleased about how they looked, I took them to my family Friday night dinner the next day, where everyone said how pretty they looked, tried to take a bite out of one, almost broke their jaws, and subsequently put them back safely on their plates. We’re all a bit mad about pineapple in our house, but can you blame us? It’s definitely one of my all time favourite fruits, so much so that we actually have a painting of a pineapple hanging above our dining table. On our last holiday baby H thought that every baby palm tree we came across was in fact a pineapple, and was sadly disappointed when we had to break it to her that they weren’t actually edible. Now I know that palm tree sized pineapples do sound like the ultimate in pineapple amazingness, but I’m pretty sure I’ve found the next best thing! Continue reading →
